Chapter 14

Seth

Banging on the front door jolts me awake. Dragging myself out of the sleeping bag, I walk downstairs, noting the sun is barely above the treetops as I open the front door.

“Hey!” Sasha says brightly. “We have some, uh, stuff for you.” She smiles, self consciously brushing off her hands on her jeans.

Standing beside her, Rue chews on her lower lip, her eyes glued to her feet.

The other night rushes back to me, and I remember again that she never answered my text from yesterday. I thought she had been avoiding me when I saw her lights off all night into this morning, but from the looks of it, she’d been with Sasha this whole time.

“Coffee?” I ask, opening the door wider to let them inside.

Rue nods and stands in the doorway to the living room, fidgeting with her sweatshirt.

“Sure,” Sasha says, throwing herself down onto the couch with a big smile.

“So, what stuff do you have? You said it’s for me?” I hand them each a mug of coffee, the sweet smell of creamer hanging in the air.

“Mm, this is so good,” Sasha says. She sets down the cup and nudges Rue.

Riffling through her backpack, Rue pulls out a small leather pouch, reaches in, and takes out a small vial and a palm size cup. Holding them out to me, she looks me in the eye for the first time since she got here.

I gingerly take the vial from her hand, the cerulean liquid swirling wildly, before looking at the deep green paste contained in the cup. “What are these?”

“The green is for Connor and his dad. For their injuries. We have another one for Tala and her dad too,” Sasha says, her voice quick with excitement. “The blue one is…” Her brows crease, and she turns to Rue.

“She said it was for the boy with green eyes to ‘help you see the truth without others seeing you’ or something like that.” Rue shrugs. “You just put it on your tongue and—”

“She?” I look back at the paste and realize what it is and where I’ve seen it before. Rudina’s salve she put on Tala after Caleb took her. “You left? You went to see her without telling me?”

“We were just trying to help, Seth.” Sasha reaches over the arm of the couch to grab my free hand.

“Help?” I step back out of her reach and pace the living room, shoving the vial into my pants pocket. “By doing what? Running off without telling anyone? Putting yourselves in danger by being in the woods? What if something happened to you?” My voice rises with each word, the fear of what could’ve happened making me nauseous.

“Calm down,” Sasha says, standing up and coming to put her hands on my shoulders. “We were fine. That’s why we went together so—”

“Really? You two chose each other to be safe? You both freeze up anytime Caleb comes anywhere near you! He could kill either one of you in an instant!”

Sasha recoils, inhaling a sharp intake of breath and putting a hand to her chest.
